01/14/08 || Pilates and Gyrotonic Studio at AudioCinema!
Hello Lovely People!
I hope you're all doing well during this New Year. Please come pay me a visit at my new Pilates & Gyrotonic studio at AudioCinema. What a good way to work off all of those holiday cookies and cocktails!
Most of you know what Pilates is, but Gyrotonic is a little newer on the scene. It, like Pilates, is a mind/body method of exercise that uses specialized equipment to lengthen and strengthen the muscles. The movements are enhanced by specific, coordinated breath work that enables the body to be energized and tension to be released. Unlike Pilates, Gyrotonic is not linear. The goal with each exercise is to move through every possible plane, utilizing the body's ability to rotate and spiral through space. The bottom line? It feels really good, and it's good for you!
I'm excited to be joining forces with Ilan, by opening my studio in such a fantastic, creative space. For those of you who have never been to AudioCinema, it is quite a magical place. It is an art and music production facility and event space. It is the best place in town for the creative minded! Art, culture, and community are alive at AudioCinema, and it's high time we bring the body arts to the space. I hope to see you all there in the new year. For more information on AudioCinema, please go to www.audiocinema.org. If you'd like more specific information on Gyrotonic, please go to www.gyrotonic.com.
Private sessions on the equipment will be available starting in January. I'll keep you informed as to the specific date that we'll begin taking clients. And as always, I'm still teaching private Pilates sessions as well as group classes. Please contact me for schedule and rate info.

11/11/07 || Supportland, a benefit for Chad Schild
What is “Supportland”?
SUPPORTLAND is an evening of music, entertainment, education, food and beverage. We aim to draw 300–500 people and raise $10,000 or more. We are engaging several big name local bands, accompanied by food and with all proceeds going to our friend and co-worker Chad Schild’s support fund.
We are a group of current and former restaurant workers who have come together to organize SUPPORTLAND, a benefit event featuring live music, food, beverages and more. Proceeds from this event will go to the medical support fund for Chad Schild.
We are seeking your support and participation in this event.
Who is Chad Schild?
On June 25th Chad was taken to the ER at Good Samaritan Hospital after an accumulation of unusual but seemingly routine health complaints. The following night doctors gave him a stunning diagnosis: Chad has Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, an uncommonly aggressive form of cancer.
He is currently receiving as much chemotherapy as his body will tolerate in an attempt to force this disease into remission. Chad, age 35, has been part of our Portland community since early 2002. He has been employed at Papa Haydn and Jo Bar on NW 23rd for the past 5 years. Anyone who lives, eats or drinks in this neighborhood would recognize Chad’s sandy blonde beard and remember his never-ending wisecracks.
Like 46 million other Americans, and like so many of our fellow Portland restaurant workers, Chad does not have health insurance. While the Oregon Health Plan and Medicare may step up to cover some part of his medical expenses, he is still unable to work, and his monthly bills are piling up. This combination of medical bills and debt threatens to derail Chad’s life even if he does make a full recovery from his current condition.
Meanwhile, Chad’s family is rearranging their lives to travel to Portland during this battle, stretching everybody’s budget to the limit. Chad’s story is the ultimate “what if” tale for restaurant workers. As we all know, it is not economically feasible for most restaurants to offer health insurance to all their employees. But we can band together to support a member of our service industry family during this tragedy.
Please consider contributing via Paypal to a general fund to help Chad out during his ongoing treatment. Learn more.

October's Film Night
Intermission
10/02/07 through 10/2707 || Shade travelling to the NewMark Gallery, San Francisco
San Francisco, CA.
Mark J. Wladika, director of Newmark Gallery, San Francisco is pleased to announce his fourth solo show of new paintings by Portland based abstract artist, Ilan Laks in October of 2007.
These powerful, large-scale abstracts continue the artist’s process of creating complex paintings that capture light, refracting it through layers of color, meticulously producing the illusion of multi-dimensional depth. He focuses on creating cohesive groups of ten or more paintings, which he works on concurrently. Working on birch panels in oils and mixed media, these paintings are richly textured and deeply resonant.
According to Mr. Wladika, “Laks employs a process unheard of with contemporary painters: time. He takes anywhere form 12 to 18 months to complete a painting and the result is evident. His stellar abstracts are dense with information while maintaining a†coherency†that is rare in the genre. Laks spends a significant amount of time on reduction, on removing paint. Adding and removing paint layer by layer until a three dimensional universe is constructed in two dimensions. His mastery of pallete, medium and technique allows him to push the limits of oil paints into territories both new and mysterious.”
Ilan Laks was born is Boston, Massachusetts in 1972. He has traveled extensively and maintained active studios in Europe, Israel, and various regions of the United States. He spent a year painting in Barcelona, Spain and outside of Santa Fe in the ghost town of Cerillos, New Mexico. In Los Angeles he became a member of Downtown Artist Development Association (DADA) and exhibited in Santa Monica, Beverly Hills and Downtown Los Angeles. While studying at the San Francisco Art Institute where he received his BFA in Painting in 2005, he produced events that created alliances and opportunities for many local artists. He now lives in Portland, Oregon where he is the founder and owner of AudioCinema.
Newmark Gallery San Francisco is located at 251 Post Street, Suite 412 in the Union Square area of San Francisco. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 11 am - 6 pm and by appointment. Visit our website at www.newmarkgallery.com for more information or call 415.392.3692 or email art@newmarkgallery.com
Show Dates: September 6th - 28, 2007
(Monday-Saturday, 2-8)
PREVIEW PARTY: First Thursday, September 6th, 6-9:30 PM
About Ilan Laks work:
These powerful, large-scale abstracts continue the artist's process of
creating complex paintings that captures light, refracting it through
layers of color, meticulously producing the illusion of
multi-dimensional depth. Working on
birch panels in oils and mixed media, these paintings are richly
textured and deeply resonant. Ilan states " I start a group or
"litter" of paintings, 10 or so within the same month. For the next
year and a half I raise this litter as best I can. Trying to always
remember their individuality that makes them unique, while celebrating
the familial ties that bind them. I try to mitigate their weaknesses
and bring out their strengths. I don't shelter them from risk; rather
I sponsor and encourage any direction they wish to grow in. I cannot
make a river or a tree, but I can be creator in this galaxy. These
snapshots of the different landscapes within this galaxy provide my
life with a certain amount of shade against the harsh light of our
earth bound reality. These paintings are not pictures of anything;
they are the 'thing' itself".

07/29/07 || Handmade Bazaar @ AudioCinema
Handmade Bazaar, Portland's bi-annual buy/sell/trade handmade arts & crafts sale.
excerpt from their website: handmadebazaar.org
The focus on handmade comes from a basic belief that the general public can be self-sufficient. 'Convenience culture' hands us ready-made lives: our homes, food, and clothing are all made by someone else or come from far away. We have become so far removed from the processes involved in creating our
surroundings that we feel powerless to build or fix things for ourselves. When we take the time to make our own things and encourage community around making these items, we begin to take back power over our lives. This means deciding individually what we need and want and bringing that into existence. This can range from meeting basic needs to entertaining frivolous fancies. Further, 'handmade' promotes individuality over assembly line perfection because of the nature of the objects themselves. What is unique about these objects is not only the physical evidence of a human maker, but the decisions and thought that a person puts into their design. This insures that every handmade item will be different from the next.

Booze! BBQ! BarFly! Eight's not nearly enough.
Per their announcement:
Join us, won't you? We've friends coming. One month from the day MC
Baby Powder Fresh shattered an ankle leaping from the Berbati's stage
whip-smart, white-hot hip-hop sensation The Buttery Lords face their
nemesis to kick out the rhymes. Empty Records' Pure Country Gold cut a
sniffable-riffage garage crash with narratives so well crafted they
almost explain the band's name. Yet-still-living-legends Bradly Wayne
Shaver and Jedediah Aaker's new troupe, The Darlins, channels a
loose-hipped rawk onslaught timeless and pure. Midst a theater of
violence, Fist of Dishonor's shadow-warrior-core wields a sharpened
metal. Titans of Oblivion chugs the heavier elements of '70s FM through
indie filters. The veterans of Fireballs Of Freedom, Wadsworth, and
Poison Idea behind just-born party-rock-supergroup Pure Decadence plough
a nasty organ-driven (in every way) groove.
No cover, of course. BarFly wouldn't hear of such. The BBQ buffet is free
as well, and extravagant drink specials enable our poorest admirers. The
magazine just wants a word, a touch, a fold. Thicker, true, a tad larger
(n.b. dealers), the four colors startle, but it's the same old mag you've
always known. C'mon, flip through, remember how things used to be. The legacy
endures. And endurance is more important than truth.
